Something good about the World Football Cup is its hypnotizing power.

One is so enthralled by the goals and edgy about the penalties that one even forgets to look at the Brazilian girls attending the matches –that is how powerful it is. Paradoxically, the downside of this is that it affects short-term memory, since these are 30 days in which nothing happens, even when it is possible that a lot of things are unravelling off the football courts.

An example of this is the most recent leg of the IAAF Diamond League, in Lausanne, Switzerland, in which three Cuban athletes competed.

Discus thrower Jorge Fernández earned silver and set a personal record at 66,50 meters. Polish Piotr Malachowski, world leader of the season, earned gold with a shot to 66,63 meters, while Estonian Gerd Kanter (64,91) took the bronze.

Meanwhile, triple jumper Mabel Gay could not jumped over the sixth place despite her stretch to 14,27 meters. The test was once again dominated by Colombian Caterine Ibargüen (14,87), who ratified her position as the universal queen of Moscow 2013. The also runner-up in London 2012, has kept her unbeaten streak to two years and was escorted this time by Russian Ekaterina Koneva (14,67) and Portuguese Patricia Mamona (14,49).

The third Cuban athlete taking part in this stop of the Diamond League, Yordan O’Farril ended third in the 110 meters with hurdles after stopping the watches at 13,28 seconds. French Pascal Martinot-Lagarde (13,06) and Russian Sergey Shubenkov (13,13) ended first and second respectively.

One of the highlights of the day was the record of U.S. Justin Gatlin in the 100 meters, 9.80 seconds, the best of the season. Another outstanding performance was that of Grenadian Kirani James, who set the best record of the year in the 400 meters at 43.74 seconds.

Czech javelin thrower Barbora Spotakova threw the best shot of the season at 66,72 meters. Other remarkable performances were those of New Zealand shot put thrower Valerie Adams (20,42 meters) and French pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie (5,87).
