Cuban Osleni Guerrero traveled to the Canadian city of Markham to participate in the Pan American Badminton Championships, where he will defend the title won last year.

Guerrero , owner of the best seat of America in world ranking (54), will be the top seed of the tournament, and his first opponent will be the Jamaican Matthew Lee.

This competition grants 5 000 points to the winner, according to Prensa Latina news agency.

The main rivals of the Cuban will be American Sattawat Pongnairat, second seed, and Guatemala's Kevin Cordon, now recovered from a serious injury to his knee, along with Brazilians Daniel Paiola and Alex Yuwan.

Guerrero, Guadalajara 2011 Pan American runner up, won the gold medal in the continental competition, held in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic, in October 2013.

This season he has achieved two titles in the Peru Open and the Venezuela International Tournament, plus bronze medals in the Havana Giraldilla, and the Brazil Grand Prix.

He also competed this year for the second time in his career in a World Cup, though he was once again eliminated in the opening round.

However, on more than one occasion he has shown conditions to shine in a sport dominated almost entirely by Asian and European players.

This event on Canadian soil will be a good warm up opportunity in order to get in the best shape to the Central American and Caribbean Games, to be held from November 14 to 30 in Veracruz, Mexico.

In these regional games the Cuban badminton hopes to win two crowns in the men’s single and in men’s or mixed doubles .
