Nanjing: Cuba Wins Bronze Medal in Olympic Judo

The Cuban Ivan Felipe Silva won a bronze medal today in the 81 Kg category of Judo, at the Second Youth Olympics being held in this Chinese city, capital of the eastern province of Jiangsu. Speaking with Prensa Latina, the head of the Cuban delegation to these competitions, Heriberto Suarez, expressed his joy for the victory, where the Serbian N. Majdov was toppled.

Some 4,000 athletes from 204 countries and regions participating in this second Olympic edition for youth from 14 to 18 years of age, an idea launched in 2001 by Jacques Rogge, then president of the International Olympic Committee. The first meet took place four years ago in Singapore.

These Second Youth Olympics, which will run through August 28, were opened on Saturday by President Xi Jinping at the Nanjing Stadium, with a colorful and attractive ceremony that linked fireworks, dancing, acrobatics, lights, music and other elements, leaving an unforgettable impression.

Cuba is participating with 12 athletes at the event in this ancient Chinese city, home of numerous dynasties.
