Trump’s Statements on Greenland Reflect Imperialism: Sophie Primas
especiales
On Wednesday, French government spokesperson Sophie Primas remarked that Donald Trump’s comments about his interest in Greenland reflect “a form of imperialism.”
During the press conference following the Council of Ministers meeting, she emphasized that Europeans must stop being naive and take measures to protect themselves against the growing dominance of major global powers.
Primas described the issue raised by the statements of the next U.S. president as “extremely sensitive,” pointing out that they highlight the increase in imperialism worldwide. She made these comments when questioned about Trump’s remarks concerning Greenland.
“There is a form of imperialism that manifests concretely both through declarations like Trump’s about annexing entire territories and digitally through the technological dominance of certain global players, whether they are American, Chinese, or from elsewhere, who seek to shape thought,” she said.
In response to this, the French government spokesperson stressed that “now more than ever, we must become aware, alongside our European partners, and move away from a form of naivety.”
She called for “investment” in defense, digital technology, and space to “protect ourselves” and “ensure Europe’s strength in the face of these global blocs.”
French Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Noël Barrot expressed confidence that the United States would not invade Greenland. However, he argued that the European Union must wake up and recognize that we are entering an era governed by “the law of the strongest.”
