A tribute to Fidel and to the Venezuelan people who defend their choice of Nicolas Maduro as president against the machinations of the empire was the topic of a virtual press conference convened from Caracas on August 13 by the Venezuela-Cuba National Movement of Friendship and Mutual Solidarity.

“We will continue the battle for a better world guided by the teachings of Fidel and Chávez”, general coordinator Jhonny García Calles said on the occasion of the 98th anniversary of the birth of the Commander-in-Chief of the Cuban Revolution.

In a statement released at the meeting, the Movement assures: “Fidel is a benchmark of resistance, an example of dignity, a transcendent man who keeps coming back to life to point the way and whose legacy must be present in the fight against imperialism”.

Representatives of the Latin American and Caribbean Continental Network of Solidarity with Cuba joined the event, including Victor Gaute, vice-president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), who stressed that the day was one of joy, commitment and unity, remarked that the attacks against Venezuela are attacks against all peoples, and lashed out at the recent acts of vandalism in the sister nation, describing them as “fascist, as the empire and its lackeys conceive their power”.

Milagros Rivera, president of the Cuba Solidarity Committee in Puerto Rico, offered full support to the Venezuelan people and evoked Fidel, calling him a good friend of humanity.

On her end, activist Gloria la Riva, coordinator of the Committee for Solidarity with Cuba and Venezuela in the U.S., said that Fidel “was brilliant as a tactician of struggles and a man of boundless courage who lives on among us”.
