The Porto club on Friday confirmed the death of Cuban handball player Alfredo Quintana, and Portugal's sports are in mourning, local media, including Tribuna Expreso, Ionline and JM Madeira, reported.

The Porto club informed about the death of the Cuban-Portuguese goalkeeper on Twitter, who fought for his life at the Sao Joao Hospital for five days due to a cardiopulmonary arrest during training early this week.

'The message that we never thought we would share: Our dear Alfredo Quintana left us today. You will always be remembered as one of our own. A real dragon. Rest in eternal peace, Quintana!' the Porto club highlighted when announcing the news.

Quintana was a member of the Portuguese team since 2014, after participating with the Cuban team in the Pan-American Games and the 2009 World Championships.
