National Series: Battle for Final Postseason Berth Heats Up
especiales

The battle for the final postseason berth in the 64th National Baseball Series continued to heat up today, as the three teams still in contention each emerged victorious in their respective matchups.
Vegueros de Pinar del Río, Elefantes de Cienfuegos, and Leopardos de Villa Clara remain locked in a fierce struggle to advance to the next stage, which will be decided next month.
At the Capitán San Luis stadium, the Vegueros notched their 39th win, clung to eighth place, and took an important step toward their qualifying aspirations with a 5-1 victory over Industriales, a team that concluded its regular season in fifth position.
Gabriel Cantero pitched a gem of six innings to earn his sixth win of the campaign, his only mistake being a solo home run by his former teammate Yaser Julio González.
Remberto Barreto took the loss, and Frank Abel Álvarez earned the save after recording the final three outs. With the bat, Lester Benítez stood out, hitting two singles, a double, and driving in four runs.
The Elefantes defeated the Matanzas Crocodiles 8-6 at the 5 de Septiembre stadium, also reaching 39 wins. However, they no longer control their own destiny to reach the quarterfinals, having finished their qualifying schedule.
Now, the herd of pachyderms—one of the surprise teams of the championship—must sit and wait for either a loss by the pinareños in their final game or for the Leopardos to lose three of their 10 remaining contests.
In today’s game, a six-run rally in the sixth inning proved sufficient for the win. Erisbel Arruebarrena hit a two-run homer to tie the game, and Erick Acevedo delivered a key double that cleared the loaded bases.
José Carlos Sarría pitched two innings and, despite allowing two runs, earned his fifth win of the season. Andrys Pérez hit a solo home run in the losing effort, and Noervys Entenza took the loss, which dropped his saurians to third place overall, behind the Holguín Cubs.
Finally, the Leopardos defeated the Ciego de Ávila Tigers 5-3 on the grass of the José Ramón Cepero stadium, earned their 31st win, and kept their mathematical hopes alive of sneaking into the big postseason party.
Ariel Díaz drove in a pair of runs to support the work of José Carlos Quesada, who earned the win from the mound after working 6.2 innings and allowing three runs. Rubén Ortega saved the game by recording the final seven outs, and Kendry Machado, in a relief role, took the loss.
For the Tigers, Brayan Romero stood out at the plate with a pair of hits and three RBIs.
