The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has reiterated its collaboration with Cuba on food production, a press release stated on Saturday.

A message from FAO stressed that the Cuban Government is implementing strategies to prevent and reduce food losses and waste with FAO technical assistance.

The press release added that as part of implementing the Law on Food Sovereignty and Food and Nutrition Security, the 5th Meeting of the National Committee on the issue above-mentioned was held.

Members of the Provincial Food Sovereignty Commissions and those involved in food production, transformation, and marketing nationwide participated in the debate.

They stated that the meeting aimed to update last year’s main actions in awareness-raising, communication, drawing up policies for preventing and reducing food losses and waste, and advise provincial and municipal commissions about the issue.

Following their recent approval by the National Committee, these guidelines will come into force this year, along with a Basic Technical Guide to train all stakeholders in the food systems.

The meeting underlined the need to strengthen the training, communication, follow-up, and monitoring in the country at all levels, using the tools and methodologies developed by FAO as a reference.

Cuba’s National Food Sovereignty and Nutrition Education Plan includes, among its strategic axes, the prevention and reduction of food losses, which are regulated as essential to strengthen the respective local systems.
