Díaz-Canel and Guterres recognize the relevance of the G77 Summit

The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and the secretary general of the United Nations, António Guterres, agreed the eve on the importance of the G77 and China Summit for the promotion of the Development Goals Sustainable (SDG).

During a meeting in this capital, both exchanged about the relevance of the meeting to raise the voice of the broader bloc within the United Nations System, which has as its theme Current development challenges: Role of science, technology and innovation.

Guterres arrived in the Caribbean nation on Thursday with a broad agenda that includes meetings with the United Nations representation in the country; the head of Foreign Trade, Ricardo Carbisas; and other officials.

In recent press statements, the head of the UN assured that the event in Havana will serve as a preview before the SDG Summit next week, to learn about the needs and goals of the bloc that brings together the voice of the south.

The meeting is essential to address core issues for the United Nations such as the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the response to climate change, he said Wednesday at a press conference from the organization’s headquarters. “The central issue is, first of all, that our countries are able to mobilize their own resources and align their policies with the SDGs and this is valid for all developing countries and then for all members of the group,” emphasized the senior representative.

Although the UN recognizes the need for each country to commit to the 2030 Agenda, at the same time it demands a change in the global financial architecture to boost southern nations.

“We must recognize that the international financial system does not facilitate the priorities of developing countries,” he added.

The G77 and China, in fact, helped build a consensus and raised their voice to make changes in the international financial architecture, particularly in financing policies, and in many other aspects, he added.

Developing countries, he warned, lack the necessary space to be able to effectively implement the Sustainable Development Goals and mobilize resources and align their policies with those goals.

“We can do more together to have more equity, more justice, more equality in the international economic and financial systems,” he said.
