Havana, Nov 25 (Prensa Latina) Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez on Wednesday expressed Cuba's sorrow for the death of Argentinean soccer player Diego Armando Maradona.

'Maradona's death hits us on November 25. His friendship with Cuba and especially with Fidel made him part of this people,' Rodriguez tweeted.

The minister added, 'The world mourns the human being, the soccer player, the friend', and offered his condolences to relatives and the Argentinean people. The soccer star died from a cardiorespiratory arrest at the age of 60 and although the news is recent, thousands of fans have taken to the streets in his homeland to express their pain.

Diego Maradona was a great friend of the Cuban people and of Fidel Castro, who also passed away on this day four years ago.

The maximum revolutionary reference in Latin America in the 20th century, Fidel Castro and one of the best players in the history of soccer, Maradona —for many the best— met in 1987, when Maradona was invited by Prensa Latina to receive the award to the best Latin American athlete of the year, in Cuba.

Maradona won the youth world championship in 1979 with Argentina's national team and triumphed two years later with Boca Juniors, then began a European journey that took him to F.C. Barcelona (1982-84), Naples (1984-91) and Seville (1992-93).

In Argentina, he played for Newell's Old Boys and Boca Juniors before retiring in 1997. With his country's team, he participated in four world championships and won the world title in Mexico (1986), where he gave a marvelous and unforgettable performance.
