Today, Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero sent his congratulations to wrestler Mijaín López, five-time Olympic champion and legend of the national sport, on the occasion of his 43rd birthday.
The head of government wrote on his X social media profile:
“Congratulations, Mijaín! #Cuba celebrates your life and all the glory you have achieved for the pride of your people.”
Through the same platform, the president of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation, Osvaldo Vento, also expressed his congratulations and praised López as an exemplary athlete: “humble, humble, and deeply committed to his people and the Revolution.”
Born in the town of Herradura, in the western province of Pinar del Río, Mijaín López achieved a milestone in Olympic history by winning his fifth consecutive gold medal in a single individual discipline (Greco-Roman wrestling) during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
With this achievement, he became the first athlete in Olympic history to win five Olympic titles in an individual event.
On July 3, he was honored as the Best Male Athlete of the Year 2024 in the Americas, an award given by the Continental Section of the International Sports Press Association (AIPS).
This distinction recognizes not only his recent achievement, but also a career spanning more than three decades, during which he has accumulated 10 world championships and numerous titles in continental competitions, establishing himself as one of the leading figures in Cuban and international sport.
