The Cuban teams signed ties today at the closing of the Budapest 2024 Chess Olympiad and their final placements did not leave the best of flavors.
In the so-called open segment, which the unstoppable Indian team won, those from the Island negotiated a draw with Finland in the farewell, a result that left them with an accumulated 13 points and anchored in 46th place, far from the expectations of their five members.
However, some individual performances should be highlighted, given the addition of points to their Elo coefficients. These are the cases of Luis Ernesto Quesada from Avila (3.2) and Elier Miranda from Villa Clara (8.4), who’s combined efforts contributed eight wins throughout the tournament.
Carlos Daniel Albornoz from Camagüey finished with five points in 10 games and although he only achieved a couple of victories, he fulfilled his role as the leader of the team, by signing six equalities against the best players of each opposing squad.
As a substitute, Havana-born Omar Almeida registered four wins, barely conceded two setbacks and shared honors three times, but ended up giving up 4.5 Elo units. The lowest point was carried out by Dylan Berdayes, also from the capital, who was successful on only two occasions and lost 14 points in his coefficient.
The Indians, led by their star Dommaraju Gukesh, deserved all the praise thanks to an impeccable performance, marked by 10 successes and just one tie in their match with Uzbekistan during the ninth round.
Their unstoppable pace left them with 21 units and new monarchs, after taking five points off the very strong roster of the United States.
The third seat corresponded to the Uzbeks, who also closed with 17 scores, but with lower dividends in the tiebreaker system.
In the women's tournament, the Cubans put an end to their incursions with another tie, this time with the girls from the United Arab Emirates on the other side of the board. That outcome left the points achieved in the competition at 12, valid for occupying a discreet 55th place in the ranking.
India, in possession of 19 units, took the gold medal, relegating the representations of Kazakhstan (18) and the United States (17) to the remaining positions on the podium, in that order.
Among the Island's exponents, the most notable was the performance of Yerisbel Miranda from Pinar del Río, who played all 11 rounds and left with 7.5 scores in her locker.
Despite the effort, she will leave the Hungarian capital with a loss of 23.6 points in his Elo, since the balance of six wins, two losses and three armistices was achieved against rivals of much lower rank, according to the registration prior to the tournament.
The experienced Maritza Arribas had another notable performance, completing six lines in nine incursions. The woman from Santiago won five games, lost two matches and signed a similar number of draws, which allowed her to add 15 points to her Elo rating.
Her countrywoman Oleiny Linares registered 4.5 out of a possible nine, the also indomitable Yaniela Forgas signed 3.5 in the same number of duels and the Camagüey native Ineymig Hernández achieved 3.5 in six appearances.
