Cuba finished second by country in the Junior Pan American Judo Cup, a competition that took place this weekend in Panama with the participation of 182 athletes - 102 men and 80 women - from 20 countries.
According to the Pan American Confederation website www.panamjudo.org, Cubans won three gold medals, one less than the champion Brazil, three silver medals and four bronze ones, as well as two fifth places and important points for the Junior Pan American Games in Asuncion, Paraguay, from August 9 to 23.
The titles went to Deyanara Curbelo, in the over 78 kilograms (kg), Naysdel Cardoso (90 kg) and Adel Assiel Fresneda (66 kg), two of these in bouts between Cubans.
Aslin Alpajon (+78 kg), Mauricio de Armas (66 kg) and Liliaris Gonzalez (78 kg) deserved the silver medals, and Jon Bon Kuan Fleitas (73 kg), Alejandro Cesar (81 kg), Zail Ramirez (100 kg), Yunaisy Roque (48 kg), and Yainet Coronado (48 kg) the bronze medals, while Dali Semanat (52 kg) and Jonathan Delgado (+100 kg) finished fifth.
As scheduled, today the disciples of Felix Portuondo and Jondrette Diaz Rafael Rubio, in the women's division, and Rafael Rubio and the Glory of Cuban Sport Yurisleidis Lupetey, Olympic and world medalist, in the men's division, will leave for Peru.
They will complete a training base in that country and will participate in the Junior Pan American Judo Championship in Lima, the last qualifying tournament for the Paraguayan multisport event.
