Cuba and UNESCO analyze alternatives for distance education

Havana, October 14 (RHC)-- Representatives from Cuba and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) analyzed alternatives for collaboration in distance education.

During the virtual meeting, Cuban officials highlighted that distance education is a way to continue the teaching process, in the middle of the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus and the paralysis of the current school year.

They also explained the strategy developed by Cuba, in which the use of television programming to guide teachers, students and families is fundamental, and the opening of free educational digital platforms.

They also denounced the effects of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States for almost 60 years, the main barrier to the development of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the country.

For its part, the team of the World Education Coalition, of UNESCO, ratified the interest in cooperating with Cuba in the implementation of innovative solutions to optimize the opportunities of ICTs and guarantee distance education.

Present at the virtual meeting were Borhene Chakroun, director of the Division for Policies and Systems for Lifelong Learning and head of the Coalition; Yahima Esquivel, ambassador and permanent representative of Cuba to UNESCO; and officials from the island's ministries of education and communications.
