The Economic Society of Friends of the Country (SEAP) convened the event Yo soy un hombre sincere (I am a sincere man), in order to promote the legacy of the National Hero of Cuba, José Martí, on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of his fall in combat on May 19, 1895.
One of its essential objectives is to delve into moments of his life and work, lessons and teachings of unquestionable validity in the contemporary world, specifies the call to which the Cuban News Agency had access.
Its sponsors are the Culture and Social Sciences sections of the SEAP, with the co-sponsorship of the Martí Studies Center and the Martí Chair of the University of Havana.
According to the text, it constitutes a cycle of conferences throughout 2025, with a monthly frequency, mostly at the headquarters of that ancient institution of Cuban civil society that recently reached the 232nd anniversary of its founding.
On December 13, 1890, Martí read his Simple Verses for the first time to a group of friends, which total 46, most of them structured in the form of quatrains, and he wrote them when he was in direct contact with nature, in the midst of of the replacement of health problems.
Precisely, themes related to nature permeate several of them, in which he also reflected some of his experiences, made reference to family and friends, and expressed very significant concepts.
On October 6, 1891 they published their collection of poems in New York City, United States; such a studied and famous work by the apostle of Cuba, coming from the heart to, in the words of its author, “put the feeling in plain and sincere forms,” because he loves “simplicity.”
It can be considered the book of his plenitude, already 38 years old and with vast experience not only in the intellectual field, but also in the emancipatory struggle of Cuba.
