Angelina Jolie to Star in “Maleficent” Sequel

The sequel, known for now simply as “Maleficent 2,” will once again feature Jolie in the starring role although the film’s release date has not yet been set, and it will be crafted by the same screenwriter who did the original movie, Linda Woolverton.

With the announcement, the doubts surrounding whether or not Jolie would appear in the sequel have been dispelled.

“I don’t know,” she had told USA TODAY in 2014 when asked about a sequel. “I enjoyed it. I just feel like we did this one thoroughly and I don’t think there’d be another.”

Disney announced last June its intention to film a sequel.

“Maleficent” hit theaters in 2014 and enjoyed enormous success with the public, raking in more than $750 worldwide, marking Disney’s return to the “Sleeping Beauty” universe with a version told from the point of view of the story’s villain, who was played by Jolie.

In the film, the actress played the evil witch who enchanted Princess Aurora, who was played by Vivienne, the daughter of Jolie and Brad Pitt.

Jolie became involved in the project as the star and executive producer, as well as playing a key role in the design of her costume and the character of the witch.

It is unknown, at present, who will direct the sequel.
