The New York Daily News reports that the director of the video, John Landis, has been working on the project non-stop for several months.
There are discussions for the video to land on multiple platforms, including on Blu-ray and even in theatres, where it has never been seen before.
Historic: The epic 14-minute Michael Jackson video Thriller will be re-released in 3D in 2015
Back in 1983, just as MTV was gaining its full head of steam, Thriller cost a then-whopping $500,000.
At the time, that was more than 10 times the amount of the average of video.
But it was a slam dunk bet; Jackson was just coming off the multiple-Grammy winning, humongously popular album of the same name.
Costly: The Thriller video cost a then-pricey $500,000 - 10 times the cost of an average video at the time
In fact, the album went on to sell more than 51 million copies, making it the most popular record of all time
Giant smashes like Billie Jean and Beat It had propelled him into the stratosphere to become the biggest star on the planet.
That's why the video has endured, and it was even inducted into the National Film Registry in 2009 by the Library of Congress, an honour usually reserved for traditional movies.
Iconic: The video set in motion an unprecedented level of success that MTV enjoyed for decades
The news comes as Landis has ended his dispute with the Jackson family that involved payment for his services on the original project.
But that's all over, so Thriller is coming back.
'That lawsuit went on for so many years, (but) we settled and they paid me finally,' Landis said.
Scary but charming: Jackson tried to court Ola Ray at the beginning, before he turned into a zombie
So how will it look after all of this work is complete?
'It is going to reappear in a highly polished and three-dimensional way that is very exciting on the big screen,' Landis said, without giving away too much.
With the re-release scheduled and renewed interest in everything Michael Jackson since his death in 2009, there could be a renaissance for Thriller that goes beyond the video.
Humongous: The album of the same name is the best-selling album of all time, with more
than 51 million copies sold
It's been rumoured that the Jackson estate has always thought that the song and video lend themselves to a whole host of media.
That includes games, theme parks and other movie and TV projects.
There have also been constant rumours that Broadway is a potential landing place for the Jackson song library.
Just the beginning: Jane Fonda presented Michael Jackson with triple platinum certification
for the Thriller album back in 1983
