A total of 2 thousand 492 new medical specialists graduated this year from the Havana-based University of Medical Sciences, who will offer their services in Cuba and in other nations of the world, since out of 1 thousand 383 medical doctors, 879 are nationals of other countries.The new professionals graduated in the specialties of medicine, nursing, dentistry, health technologies and psychology.

Our university has been forming doctors for the past 285 years, and more than 65 thousand professionals graduated here in the past five decades, said the rector of the oldest medical university in Havana, Doctor Jorge Gonzalez Perez.

The recent 2013-2014 school year in Cuba closed with the graduation of 24 thousand 342 new health professionals throughout the country, out of whom 20 thousand 773 are Cuban and 3 thousand 569 are from 77 nations.

During a recent visit to the island the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Margaret Chan, stressed the role being played by Cuba in the training of doctors for other countries, including the United States, what she described as “a generous, supportive and free contribution to those who needs it and an incredible commitment to the world.”

Chan said that the world needs thousands of doctors and nurses and stressed the training by Cuba of health professionals for Asia, Africa, North America and Latin America. She also highlighted the role of Cuban researchers and scientists for their commitment and solidarity. The fruit of their work will benefit many people around the world, stressed the WHO executive.
