Polio Vaccination Campaign in Cuba, starting on Monday
especiales
First time ever in Cuba, from January 11st, 2016, all children born from January 2015 to September 2015 will be vaccinated by injection against all viruses caused by poliomyelitis.
Dr. Francisco Duran, national director of epidemiology from the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), told CAN that the implementation of such immunogenicity is a decision of the WHO to eradicate polio of the world as well as contributing to protect children against that illness.
This high-quality vaccine, developed in the Netherlands, is also used by many nations since 1955. The vaccine efficiency is already tested and no risks for children were found.
Cuba was part of an international research process, led by the WHO, which allowed verifying that a dose of the IPV (Inactivated Polio Vaccine) by injection would totally granted immunization.
Professor and Dr. Miguel Angel Galindo, adviser of the National Program on Immunization, explained that 88,000 Cuban children will be vaccinated.
Polio is only affecting Pakistan and Afghanistan at present days.
