The President of Cuba, Raul Castro has sent the first group of 165 Cuban doctors and nurses to West Africa to help fight against the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus.

The group of health care professionals is made up of 62 doctors and 103 nurses, and are headed for Sierra Leone after two weeks of training dealing with tropical diseases.

This group will be joined by other 296 Cuban professionals in Liberia and Guinea.

Ebola started in Guinea and has spread to other parts of West Africa including Liberia, Sierra Leone, Senegal and Nigeria and has claimed over 3,000 lives with over 7,000 people infected. Experts expect these numbers to increase dramatically.

Cuba sends doctors all over the world, especially in times of disaster and emergency in addition to exchanging health professional services for cash, often used to maintain and support the aid provided.

Cuba currently has some 50,000 medical personnel serving on such medical missions around the world, specifically in 66 countries in the developing world.
