Circular economy, a priority for companies in Havana

The Circular Economy and Energy Efficiency Workshop given in late 2024 provided entities of the Grupo Empresarial de la Industria Sideromecánica (GESIME) with ideas and knowledge that they now apply to increase recycling and the use of damaged items as raw material for other productions.
According to Harilyn Tamayo Cobas, an environmental specialist with GESIME, the Cuban environmental policy is governed by Resolutions 150/2022 "On the Natural Resources and the Environment System" and 96/2023 "Regulations concerning sustainable consumption and production, circular economy, and the gradual reduction of disposable or single-use plastics", and the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment checks the results achieved by local enterprises as a result of the workshop.
“These and other initiatives contribute to the actions taken to develop economic and environmental management and tackle climate change, and they benefit our institutions through cooperation projects and new concepts and business models designed to boost the circular economy in the country”, she remarked.
In addition, she pointed out that all enterprises have realized the importance of turning waste into goods deemed valuable in other fields of the economy and improving the regenerative sustainability of materials, all of which favors changes in people’s way of thinking and contributes to environmental regeneration for the sake of national development.
