Rescue operations, led by River Rescue and Environmental Police authorities are underway but the total number of people who were on board is yet to be confirmed.
Poor condition of boats and overcrowding often leads to such accidents on the Nile.
On Oct. 14, 2007 around 10 people died after an overcrowded ferry capsized while traveling to the town of Beni Hasan, 200 km (124 miles) south of Cairo.
One of the worst Nile tragedies date back to May 25, 1983, when 326 people had died in a similar accident.
