Players and coaching staff of the El Salvador national football team have claimed that they were offered money by a Salvadoran man to win, draw or avoid a heavy defeat in Tuesday’s qualifying match against Canada tonight.

Canada must beat El Salvador by a large margin in Vancouver and must count on Mexico to beat Honduras in their match in order to stand a chance of progressing.

During a press conference, the team captain Nelson Bonilla played a 10-minute recording of a conversation in which a man can be heard promising players various amounts of money based on the result.

Bonilla said that he wanted to make it clear that the players were “against this sort of thing” and wanted to “transparent about everything that happened with the national team.”

Canada, El Salvador and Honduras are members of CONCACAF, which is responsible for football in America and the Caribbean
