Cuban GM Lázaro Bruzón (2 666 Elo points) defeated German Lars Stark (2 444) during the second round of the Masters Group of the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2016.

The Caribbean player appears now on top of the standings, tied with 41 other contestants, all with 2 units.

The list of the leaders includes the top two seeds of the tournament: American Hikaru Nakamura (2 787) and French Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (2 785).

The biggest surprise of this round came when Swedish Erik Blomqvist (2 492) beat Chinese Li Chao (2 751), while Russian Natalia Pogonina (2 454), women's world championship runner-up, did the same against Azeri Arkady Naiditsch (2 696).

Rodney Pérez (2 332), the other Cuban attending this event, so far ranks 137th with 1 point.

Bruzón faces today with black pieces Indian GM Kidambi Sundararajan (2 508).

This event is also attended by other major chess players such as Indians Viswanathan Anand (2 784) and Pentala Harikrishna (2 755), Chinese Yu Yangyi (2 747), Russian Dmitri Jakovenko (2 732), Frenchmen Laurent Fressinet (2 700), Etienne Bacrot (2 697), American Gata Kamsky, among others.
