The Granma Sorrels, Cuban representative in the 49th Caribbean Series of Baseball, were welcomed in Havana after participating in such strong tournament, where they ended fourth.
At the International Airport Jose Marti, the team was welcomed. In Mexico, the Sorrels ended with a positive winning percentage after achieving three wins and 2 losses. This tournament helped our team to prepare for the upcoming World Baseball Classic next March.
Members of the National Institute for Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER) —headed by its president Dr. Antonio Becalli— welcomed the sports delegation.
In Culiacan, the Cuban team got wins versus Licey Tigers, Caguas Criollos, and Mexicali Aguilas. The only loss was versus Zulia Aguilas. Then, they lost against Mexicali Aguilas in the semifinals 1-0 in an outstanding baseball game.
Nonetheless, the Granma players had the chance to face high level opponents with vast experience and competitiveness.
Three Cuban players made the All-Star team of the competition and they were: RHP Lazaro Blanco, INF Willian Saavedra, and INF Carlos Benitez.
Blanco only allowed one ER in 13.1 Inn. Saavedra hit .375 meanwhile Benitez ended with .538.
Carlos Benitez stated: “I am happy with my performance; I have no pressure while playing. I am very focused on what I have to do. That is why things turned positive for me.”
Benitez also emphasized on the unity of the group as a cornerstone to face a bigger challenge: the World Baseball Classic.
