The tightening of the US blockade is currently hindering Cuba's fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, the island's Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said.

Addressing the 20th Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), held virtually on Wednesday, Rodriguez denounced that Washington's unilateral coercive measures hinder the sustainable development of the Cuban people.

The increase in the aggressiveness of that northern power occurs at a time when the island is making efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19 in its territory and in other nations, including the promotion of a defamatory campaign against its international health collaboration, the diplomat noted.

During the forum, which brought together foreign ministers and deputy foreign ministers from more than 20 regional countries, the head of Cuban diplomacy pointed out that that hostile policy violates international law.

The White House sanctions also affect other regional nations such as Venezuela and Nicaragua, equally immersed in fighting the complex epidemiological situation caused by Covid-19, Rodriguez said.

The diplomat warned that this health crisis will cause the largest economic contraction in the history of the region, so he highlighted the urgency to strengthen cooperation between Latin American and Caribbean nations.
