Fidel said, with his extraordinary capacity to go to the future and come back to tell us that when the soldiers of Angola retired, the doctors would remain, the teachers would remain... because we had to help this country to recover. And so it happened.
Today, more than 1,700 Cuban collaborators provide services in the 18 provinces of Angola, in sectors such as health, education, business, water resources, among others.
To all of them, the member of the Political Bureau of the Party and Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz, expressed his recognition when he exchanged with a representation of the cooperators in this African land, mainly in the health sector, and with the diplomatic personnel accredited here.
An embrace, on behalf of Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, leader of the Cuban Revolution, and the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, reached the entire audience, in the words of the Head of Government, who highlighted the positive impact of the collaboration on the Angolan people, direct witness of one of the most glorious pages of internationalism.
Accompanied by the Cuban delegation, especially by the member of the Political Bureau and First Deputy Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, General of the Army Corps Ramón Espinosa Martín, Marrero Cruz reviewed the complexities faced by the country, with a sensitive impact on the population, and he focused on the effects of the blockade imposed by the United States, which is the greatest obstacle to the economic and social development of the largest of the Antilles.
He also gave a detailed update on the implementation process of the Government's Projections to correct distortions and boost the economy, which constitute the guiding thread of the government's management at all levels.
"Despite all that has been done, the people still do not perceive the results, but it is a necessary process. We are convinced that we are going to move forward and find solutions. And we are going to preserve, above all things, the Revolution. There will be a Cuban Revolution for a long time. We will defend it with our own lives, and we will not rest until we achieve greater prosperity for our people", said the Prime Minister.
During the meeting, attention was also paid to the problems that concern the collaborators, and there was a dialogue on the challenges faced by Cuban doctors, immersed not only in health care work, but also in teaching, as well as in scientific and research work.
In addition to the pathologies typical of our specialties, said Dr. Carlos Juan Delgado, here we have faced diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV and others that are rarely seen in Cuba or have been eradicated.
As regards teaching, there are currently 624 professionals working in five medical universities. To date, more than 3,000 doctors have graduated, and if all health personnel are counted, the total exceeds 6,000.
For almost two hours they spoke of commitment, of unwavering dedication, from the sad days of the struggle against apartheid, of challenges, of the will to overcome them and, above all, of love for Cuba, which has become an ambassador of solidarity.
Previously, the Prime Minister and the Cuban delegation paid tribute to the National Hero of Angola, António Agostinho Neto, at the Memorial that bears his name.
Shortly after, they arrived at the Alto das Cruzes cemetery, where a wreath was laid in homage to Brigadier General Raúl Díaz Argüelles, first chief of Cuba's internationalist mission in this nation.
"Eternal glory to the Cuban martyrs in Angola," could be read on the ribbon of the wreath, which was left waving there, next to the trees of white flowers that guard the place, which, according to what they say, are always in bloom.
