Damascus, Jun 6 (Prensa Latina) The United States uses political blackmail at the United Nations to impose its conditions on the issue of humanitarian aid destined for Syria, Syria's delegate to the United Nations, Bassam Sabbagh, denounced.

Washington and its Western allies threaten to stop funding humanitarian aid as an instrument of pressure and blackmail to impose their terms at the UN, Sabbagh said in an interview with the Al-Watan diary.

According to the diplomat, they do not want to acknowledge that the facts and circumstances have changed and that humanitarian aid cannot continue to enter Syria through illegal border crossings, thus ending up at the hands of terrorists instead of reaching those who need it.

They have no political realism and still live in the illusions of the past, as the situation on the ground has changed completely and the current mechanism for cross-border assistance cannot continue, he remarked.

Also according to Sabbagh, this mechanism does not respect the criteria of preserving the sovereignty and independence of Syrian territories, stipulated in all Security Council resolutions related to Syria.

It is also not transparent or neutral and does not guarantee that aid reaches its beneficiaries but rather makes it easier for terrorist organizations to seize it, distribute it to their followers and use it to buy loyalties, Sabbagh said.

The cross-border aid mechanism expires on July 10th. The United States exerts pressure with the aim of renewing the Security Council resolution in this regard to ensure that its support continues to reach its allies in terrorist and separatist organizations that occupy parts of the Syrian territory.
