Scientists warn of rapid disappearance of sea ice in the Arctic

Washington, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) Scientists warned of the possibility of ice-free summers in the Arctic by 2035 due to sea ice in this region is warming three times faster than the world average.
According to a study published in the journal Science, the ice sheet is itself an endangered species that now covers half the area it had in the 1980s and whose volume decreased by 75 percent.
Experts from Oregon State University and the US Space Agency (NASA) warned that by upcoming September the extent of ice in the Arctic will reach its annual minimum.
Likewise, they report that remote sensing satellites show a faster displacement of these frozen layers towards warmer waters during the last 20 years.
'The retreat of the ice is a bad omen for the global climate, although it makes feasible a better and easier study of the Arctic zone,' says the Science report.
Among the causes of such disappearance, scientists indicate that the ice becomes thinner and weaker, which makes it prone to the cracking and crumbling accumulated on the ridges responsible for catching the wind.
