President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Saturday celebrated six decades of relations between Cuba and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), a relationship that he described as dignified and sovereign.

On his Twitter account, the head of State recalled the 60 years of diplomatic relations, and recalled his visits to North Korea.

'Friendly peoples united for a common cause. I keep fond memories of the affection of the Korean people towards #Cuba in the visits paid to that beautiful country,' the president wrote.

On the occasion of the anniversary, North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un greeted the first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), Raul Castro, and Diaz-Canel, in a message in which he reiterated his personal support for the just struggle of the Cuban people to defend the revolutionary gains.

For 60 years, the two peoples have invariably defended, strengthened and developed noble traditions of friendship, solidarity and cooperation, the DPRK leader said.

Kim noted that the friendship between Pyongyang and Havana was established by the great leaders Kim Il Sung and Fidel Castro within the framework of the complex international situation and the challenges manipulated by hostile forces.
