Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Monday urged local authorities to better take advantage of the country's beekeeping potential, sector he termed as ideal for domestic development.
During a meeting with scientists and specialists attending the National Plan for Food Sovereignty and Nutritional Education, Díaz-Canel stated there are no actions to promote beekeeping activities nationwide.
In 2021, Cuba produced over 10,500 tons of honey, 16 tons of propolis and more than 174 tons of wax – the fourth highest figure in history, and the beekeeping sector also reached around $20 million in exports. These values are expected to double by 2030.
Dr. Adolfo Pérez, Director-General of Apiculture Research Center, said it is quite necessary to update the Apiculture Development Program in order to meet this forecast.
