The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, described telecommunications as a sector with highly qualified and decisive personnel in the economic and social development of the country.

During the balance of the work of the Ministry of Communications in 2023 and the projections for 2024, the head of State assured that development has computing and telecommunications among its main supports, and despite limitations, important investments have been made in Cuba in recent years.

On the other hand, Cuba’s Prime Minister Manuel Marrero pointed out that “we must be aware that we are in a war economy scenario, where things must be done differently”. He also highlighted the impact of the information technology and telecommunications sector in improving the quality of life of the population.

During the meeting, the Minister of Communications, Mayra Arevich, presented the results and main problems of the sector in 2023, the distortions and negative trends Cuba faces and the actions to correct them and re-boost the economy, as well as the main goals and indicators to be achieved based on the work and dedication of its workers.

Arevich reported that despite the restrictions, there was a slight growth in the quality of service, and telephone density reached 83.2 percent, with 68.9 percent being covered by mobile telephony and 14.3 percent by landline.

Among the goals and indicators for 2024, the Ministry of Communications has outlined the development of work linked to the Digital Transformation Policy and the Cuba 2030 Digital Agenda, the development of the Digital Government platform, and the use and development of artificial intelligence.
