The construction of an oil refinery in Cuba is being negotiated, the project could involve the largest Russian companies, State Duma Deputy Speaker Alexander Babakov said.
"The possible construction of a refinery has been discussed, and in this regard the possible next step is deeper processing of oil products and, in particular, the production of fertilizers," Babakov told reporters on Sunday following the meetings with his Cuban counterparts.
"There is crude oil in Cuba, it would be logical not to import oil products, but produce them here," he said.
"The largest Russian state companies could be involved here," Babakov said.
The construction of a refinery "is being negotiated," Babakov said.
"Along with economic interest, it is needed to resolve a number of organizational issues in terms of creating a favorable environment for investment, I think the Cuban leadership understands this," he said.
"There is readiness, there is understanding, it is a minor issue to resolve," Babakov said.
Babakov is on a visit to Cuba on July 20-21 as part of a delegation of lawmakers led by State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin.
