The president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, has called for the activation of the Inter-American Democratic Charter of the Organization of American States (OAS), alluding to coup attempts by groups that do not recognize their electoral defeat.

The Peruvian president said that the international community must "remain vigilant against any destabilizing and coup attempt in the country."   The president's call comes after the media linked him with businesswoman Karelim López of managing an alleged criminal organization.  "I denounce in advance these types of actions that only insist on anti-democratic political maneuvers with the purpose of generating instability," said President Castillo.

"Ms. Karelim López has made statements to the Prosecutor's Office without legal support or coherence with the truth that threaten the ethics and transparency of the procedures of any investigation," emphasized the head of state.

The Peruvian president asserted that the reports published by the corporate media do not have evidence and are based on speculations.  "The same ones that conspired against the previous presidents, want to do it now against the Government of the people," he added.

Peru's opposition media have viralized a note where the businesswoman Karelim Lopez, who is being investigated for alleged favoritism in works summoned by Provías Decentralizado -Tarata Bridge case-, Petro-Peru and the presentation of an alleged false evidence of COVID-19, accuses President Castillo of allegedly leading a criminal organization.

The media accusations against the Peruvian Government have caused the president to call on all popular forces to defend democracy and the will of the people.
