Mujica recovering at home after being discharged from hospital

Uruguay's former president, José Mujica, is progressing ‘as expected’ after having a stent placed in the esophagus where cancer was detected in April.

The former president slept at his farm on the capital´s outskirts, after being discharged from the clinic where he had the device placed last Friday to improve his food and liquid intake.

His doctor, Raquel Pannone, told the press that the patient will continue to be monitored from home.

She said he is improving and will gradually resume oral and tube feeding.

Following radiotherapy treatment for cancer, the Uruguayan political leader suffered from oesophageal obstruction due to fibrosis, which prevented him from eating and caused him pain.

The endoscopic placement of a stent in his esophagus was considered successful.
