Only 23 percent of Americans are satisfied with the way things are going in the country today, while the rest seem dissatisfied, particularly over issues such as the moral climate.

According to a new Gallup poll, the overall quality of life in the country and the opportunity for a person to get ahead by working hard are the only two social dimensions of the issues surveyed that most Americans value positively.

For the first issue, 65 out of every 100 interviewees said they were pleased, while for the other issue, 61 percent spoke favorably.

However, these satisfaction rates are well below the all-time highs of 89 percent for quality of life in 2001-2002, and 77 percent for opportunities in 2002, the group recalled.

Survey participants also revealed they were unhappy with the nation’s moral and ethical climate (only 20 in 100 spoke positively), the way income and wealth are distributed (24 percent), and the size and influence of large companies (27 percent). The survey, called “Mood of the Nation”, also shows how in the last year the well-being index has improved in the areas of security against terrorism and medical and social coverage systems. .

Meanwhile, satisfaction levels fell on things like the economy, gay and lesbian acceptance, national gun laws or policies, the level of immigration and the country’s efforts to address poverty and homelessness.

Gallup has measured Americans’ satisfaction with various things every January since 2001, except for 2009 and 2010.

According to the company, the only significant change in the general evaluations of the company in the last year is a decrease of six percentage points in the level of liking with the way in which income and wealth are distributed.

In the view of Lydia Saad, the group’s director of Social Research, the feeling of well-being with the broader aspects of American life has been on a downward trend for decades, through multiple changes of administration and political parties.

“There was an increase in polarization and a decrease in national harmony,” said the expert.

Next Tuesday, President Joe Biden will deliver his State of the Union address, facing a more divided Congress after Republicans won a majority in the House of Representatives and in a country with a rather bleak outlook on things, she said to the CNN channel.
