Idea of foreign interference in coup in Bolivia gains ground

The possibility of foreign interference in last Wednesday’s failed coup d'état in Bolivia is gaining ground, and President Luis Arce is one of those who support this criteria.

All the coups d’état in the country have been premised on the economic issues. The most recent of them, in 2019, has been the issue of lithium,” the dignitary said in statements to the press and admitted the possibility of external interference based on the version that some foreign actors would be involved in the events.

According to the president, in every coup d’état in Latin America and the Caribbean, there have always been “internal interests” in addition to external ones, and in the specific case of Bolivia, this phenomenon has been “practically a constant,” he said.

Arce recalled the circumstances of the coup against the government of Evo Morales occurred in November 2019. “At that time, we were negotiating the award of a long-term contract with lithium. That is why we never rule out that there are internal interests and always behind coups d’état,” he said.

Referring to possible foreign interference in these events, Movement for Socialism deputy Juan José Huanca demanded this Thursday that the charge d’affaires of the United States embassy, Debra Hevia, be subjected to an investigation.

On June 24th, the Bolivian Foreign Ministry warned Hevia about statements and actions carried out by the United States embassy personnel that are considered interference in internal affairs.
