The 2025 Wanda Diamond League season kicks off with a bang on Saturday, 26 April, in Xiamen, China, featuring global track and field stars such as Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Letsile Tebogo, who are eager to reaffirm their dominance in their respective disciplines.
Ukrainian sensation Mahuchikh, a three-time Diamond Trophy champion in the high jump, arrives in Xiamen with her sights set on surpassing her own meet record of 2.02 metres, achieved back in 2023. Last year, Mahuchikh dazzled the world by setting a stunning world record of 2.10 metres in Paris—the city where she also claimed Olympic gold.
In addition to clinching Diamond League victories in Stockholm, Lausanne, and Zurich, Mahuchikh secured her third consecutive circuit title at the final in Brussels. For the 2025 season, she’s not only aiming to maintain her dominance but also to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the high jump.
On the men’s side, Botswana’s Tebogo, Olympic 200m champion, will make his Xiamen debut in the 100m. The versatile sprinter stunned the athletics world in 2024 with 200m victories in Monaco, Lausanne, Silesia, and Zurich, along with a 100m win in Rome. Although he finished second in the 200m final in Brussels, Tebogo solidified his status as one of the sport’s most dynamic and adaptable sprinters. Xiamen offers Tebogo a fresh stage to prove his mettle in the 100m, showcasing his explosive talent and cementing his reputation as one of the most electrifying figures in global athletics.
Another star to watch closely is St. Lucia’s Julien Alfred, who is set to compete in the 100m events in Oslo and Stockholm this June. The sprinter, an Olympic gold medallist in the 100m and silver medallist in the 200m, is also the reigning world indoor champion in the 60m. The Caribbean talent left a lasting impression in 2024 with her triumph in the 100m in Monaco and her Diamond Trophy victory in Brussels.
With the 2028 Olympic Games in LA on the horizon, she sees the Diamond League as a crucial stage for honing her craft and sharpening her preparation. Also with a star-studded lineup, the 2025 Diamond League opener in Xiamen will definitely be an unforgettable spectacle. From historic records to heart-stopping competitions, the international athletics stage is set to shine brightly as the sport embarks on another epic season.
