Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdes Mesa considered the election of representatives of the Municipal Assemblies of People's Power as the primary link in the country's political system.

In statements to the press, after casting his vote in the Electoral College number one, in the capital's Playa municipality, the dignitary highlighted the democratic nature of the nomination process of the candidates, who were proposed in assemblies by the residents of their area of residence.

"Today we have come to exercise a right and a duty endorsed in our Constitution, that of voting and being elected", he said.

He indicated that after this vote, the process of confirmation of the municipal assemblies of the People's Power, the highest representative body in the localities, will begin.

On this day, he added, the country will ratify its political system, which is unique, genuine, and democratic.

More than eight million Cubans are summoned today to go to the polls to elect the representatives of the Municipal Assemblies of People's Power, the most important decision-making body in each territory, including the execution of the government budget.

From 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. more than 20 thousand polling stations will be open for the vote, the first one to be held after the restructuring of the island's electoral system.
