Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel paid tribute to Simon Bolivar on the 239th anniversary of his birth, remarking the validity of Bolivarian ideals on the island.

In a message on his Twitter account, the president said: “To Simon Bolivar, Liberator of Our America, the Cuban homage, a people of deep Bolivarian ideals, on the 239th anniversary of his birth”.

Simon Jose Antonio de la Santisima Trinidad Bolivar Palacios Ponte y Blanco was born on July 24, 1783 in Caracas, Venezuela, son of Juan Vicente Bolivar and Maria Concepcion Palacios.

His intelligence, will and abnegation were qualities that stood out in his personality and together with his ideals of independence from the Spanish colonial yoke led him to give 20 years of his life to the liberation of what today are Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela.

That is why history distinguishes him as the “liberator of America” whose ideas, in the case of Cuba, found the greatest expression in the thought and work of the National Hero Jose Marti, who assured that “Bolivar did not defend with so much fire the right of men to govern themselves as the right of America to be free”.
