Carlos Daniel Albornoz—Cuba’s No. 1 on the leaderboard and America’s 23rd —welcomed May with a new personal record of 2,612 ELO points in the world chess ranking thanks to his results in international tournaments held in Menorca and La Roda (Spain).
Albornoz, Cuban champion in 2019 and 2020, will play in the Elite group of the 57th international tournament Capablanca in Memoriam against chess A-listers such as former world champion Ruslan Ponomariov (ELO 2,646), the Indian's Aryan Chopra (2,641), the Danish Mads Andersen (2,598) and the Norwegian Evgeny Romanov (2,585), as well as Cuba’s current champion Luis Ernesto Quesada (2 567), the island’s only chess player so far with a place in the team that will compete in the Olympic Games in Budapest in September.
Albornoz assured that he is ready to play in a tournament of this level, in which he will strive to notch up 5 of 10 possible ELO points to avoid moving down the ranking.
