Havana, Oct 20 (Prensa Latina) The President of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel, greeted the Day of Cuban Culture today, which commemorates the date on which the National Anthem was sung for the first time in the city of Bayamo, in the east of the country, during the onset of the war for independence from the Spanish colonial rule.
The Head of State tweeted stressing that Cuban culture “is always where and when it is most useful, as the nation’s sword and shield.”
The General Director of Consular Affairs and Cubans Resident Abroad, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ernesto Soberón, recalled the event and stressed its importance in shaping the Cuban identity.
The song was authored by patriot Pedro “Perucho” Figueredo, to encourage those Cubans willing to fight for the independence of the Homeland.
