Havana, Aug 23 (Prensa Latina) President Miguel Díaz-Canel sent greetings to the members of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (Uneac), on the 61st anniversary of the founding of that cultural avant-garde organization.

From his profile on the social network Twitter, the president of the Caribbean nation alluded to the position of intellectuals and creators in the face of the colonizing wave that threatens to invade spaces, through the use of increasingly sophisticated channels.

During his speech, last July 8, at the closing of the Uneac National Council, he mentioned the contribution of artists, especially in these last two years in the face of current pandemics: Covid-19, intensification of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States and media war.

In Havana’s Convention Center, the president appreciated the promotion of values and the rescue of historical memory promoted by that organization, founded on August 22, 1961 by the poet Nicolás Guillén. For his part, Rafael González, president of the Hermanos Saíz Association, writer and playwright, classified belonging to this group as a privilege, where the present and future converge, and sent a message to “all those who love and found together with her.” .

The National Library of Cuba recognized this artistic and literary avant-garde for its contributions to national culture and Casa de las Américas valued the safeguarding of heritage elements and knowledge, in line with the thought of leader Fidel Castro.

The writer and politician Abel Prieto described 1961 as a key year for education and health, the date of the impulse of the literacy epic on the island and the birth of the National School of Art Instructors.

The president of Casa de las Américas also referred to the speech Words to the Intellectuals, delivered by Fidel, and the celebration of the Congress that would determine the emergence of Uneac, chaired for almost 30 years by Guillén.
