The Cuban Institute of Music expressed its sorrow today over the passing of maestro Julio Noroña, a founding member of the legendary orchestra Los Van Van, at the age of 85.
In a statement on social media, the institution referred to the artist's passing this Wednesday, noting, "Cuban music has lost one of its giants; his legacy, however, is eternal; his essence is etched into every song, and his rhythm, joy, and spirit will forever travel in every beat that plays."
The ICM's message recalled Noroña's unwavering friendship and loyalty to maestro Juan Formell, the founder and director for over four decades of the orchestra, famously known as "The Train of Cuban Music."
The post added, "Julio was much more than an exceptional musician; he was a brother, a musical father, and an example of the discipline and passion that define our culture."
The condolences from the ICM were joined by messages from other Cuban musical groups, such as Maykel Blanco y su Salsa Mayor and Havana D'Primera.
The latter expressed in a communication that "Noroña has left the earthly plane, but his smile and energy will live forever on the stages, reminding the world of his greatness."
