Cuba called for more cooperation and international solidarity against the Covid-19 pandemic and the attacks on multilateralism and global organizations, at a forum between China and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), diplomatic sources reported on Thursday.

The deputy minister for Science, Technology and the Environment, Jose Fidel Santana, represented Cuba at the virtual meeting, according to the Caribbean island's Embassy in Beijing.

In his speech, Santana noted that the acceptable control of the disease would be possible when all nations achieve health indicators that prevent acute outbreaks, so he asked for a more determined joint action to fight the pandemic.

'We should not leave any country behind or alone, not just due to an elementary sense of humanity, but because the entire effort made along 2020 can be endangered,' he pointed out.

In that regard, Santana pointed out that since April, Cuba has sent brigades of thousands of experts to more than 50 counties in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East and Europe to fight Covid-19.

'The gratitude of the friends we have in the world has been expressed through the request to the Norwegian Committee to grant them this year's Nobel Peace Prize, which makes up do the ineffable work of saving human lives better,' he stressed.

On the other hand, he explained Cuba's preparations before reporting the first Covid-19 case, and noted that among its strengths is being a socialist State with high responsibility, political and human sensitiveness, and having a free and universal public healthcare system.

The Cuban leader mentioned the adoption of measures such as reinforcing epidemiological surveillance, and the response from the sectors of science, technology and innovation, particularly the development of new highly-effective medications and therapies.

He stressed that all these results were achieved amid new unilateral sanctions by the United States against Cuba, with the goal of tightening the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed for more than half a century, and affecting the people.

Finally, Santana assured that Cuba's human resources are at the disposal of initiatives such as the creation of joint labs, scientific exchange and the construction of scientific-technological parks, among others.

'It is time to join wills and efforts to meet this huge challenge. Let's boost international cooperation and solidarity on the basis of new knowledge and novel technologies. Everyone's effort will be decisive, let's do it for the right to health, peace and the development of our peoples,' he concluded.
