Cuba denounces effects of Covid-19 on women's employment

Havana, Feb 1 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez on Monday denounced the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on women, as it has increased inequalities in the world of work.

On his Twitter account, the head of Cuban diplomacy noted that women have been the most affected by the economic effects of the health emergency, according to the humanitarian organization Oxfam.

'If gender equality existed in the sectors most affected by Covid-19, 112 million women had not been at risk of losing their revenues or jobs,' he recalled.

The International Labor Organization (ILO) reported that the pandemic has strongly stricken women's opportunities in the labor market.

According to statistics from 55 high- and medium-income countries, 29.4 million women over 25 years of age lost their jobs between the fourth trimester of 2019 and the second trimester of 2020.

In mid-2020, 1.7 times more women than men were out of the labor force in those countries, compared to 2.1 times more in Latin America, according to ILO.

A recent report from Oxfam said that 740 million women work in the informal economy and, during the first month of the pandemic, their revenues decreased by 60 percent, accounting for more than 396 billion dollars.
