Charlize Theron and Rosie O'Donnell were among the public figures who criticized billionaire Jeff Bezos and his wife, journalist Lauren Sánchez, for hosting a $50 million wedding in the Italian city of Venice.
The Mad Max: Fury Road actress opened the weekend event for her foundation, the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP), in Los Angeles by joking that those in attendance might be the only people who were not invited to Bezos’s three-day wedding celebration.
"But it doesn’t matter, they suck and we’re awesome," Theron said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Theron also used the opportunity to denounce U.S. immigration policies under President Donald Trump's administration, stating they had "destroyed the lives of families, not criminals."
Comedian Rosie O'Donnell expressed her disapproval on Instagram on Monday, referring to Sánchez as a "fake female robot wife."
"The Bezos wedding made me sick. Watching all those billionaires gather in the midst of such excess," O'Donnell wrote.
O'Donnell, who moved to Ireland shortly after Trump’s election victory, also criticized some of the wedding’s celebrity guests, which reportedly included the Kardashian family, Sydney Sweeney, Ivanka Trump, and actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio.
"Oprah is friends with Jeff Bezos? Really? How is that possible? He treats his employees with disdain. From any perspective, he is not a good person," O'Donnell added, referring to television host and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey, who also attended the wedding.
The multi-day celebration sparked protests in Venice over its impact on the city. Activists accused Bezos of having "rented Venice" while his multinational company Amazon allegedly continues to avoid paying taxes in Italy.
