The Attorney General's Office of the Republic provided an update on the criminal proceedings being handled by the Ministry of the Interior following the serious incident that occurred in the early hours of August 25.

The event, which shocked the population, involves Italian citizen Mario Pontolillo, 56, a permanent resident of Cuba, who has been charged with alleged crimes including murder and others, after deliberately running over several people with his car on public roads in the municipalities of Centro Habana and Habana Vieja.

This reprehensible act resulted in the tragic death of one woman, injuries to several individuals, and endangered collective security.

The Attorney General's Office, in strict compliance with its constitutional mandate and within the framework of absolute legality, is overseeing the investigation. Currently, the necessary investigative procedures are being carried out to gather all evidence required to conclude the investigations.

The accused is under the precautionary measures of provisional detention and a prohibition from leaving the national territory.

The Attorney General's Office, with full respect for the rights and guarantees enshrined in the Constitution and laws of the Republic, will pursue public criminal action before the competent Court and will request penalties commensurate with the severity of the facts and the circumstances under which they occurred.

The Attorney General's Office of the Republic continues to act firmly in defense of the law and the security of all Cubans.
