Argentina, Canada, Cuba, USA qualify for the WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup 2022 in New Zealand

The four qualified nations will represent the Americas in the upcoming WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup, and will join world No. 3 Australia, No. 4 Czech Republic, No. 5 New Zealand, No. 9 Denmark, and No. 10 South Africa in the flagship men’s softball event. The remaining teams will be two teams from the Asian qualifier and a wild card.

World No. 2 and defending world champions Argentina, No. 6 Canada, No. 7 USA and No. 18 Cuba qualified for the WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup 2022, to be played in Auckland, New Zealand, from 26 November to 4 December. 

These teams had secured their tickets as the top four of the Americas Qualifier after the end of the Super Round, with Canada and Argentina playing the final on Saturday, while USA and Cuba will battle for the bronze medal.

The four qualified nations will represent the Americas in the upcoming WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup, and will join world No. 3 Australia, No. 4 Czech Republic, No. 5 New Zealand, No. 9 Denmark, and No. 10 South Africa in the flagship men’s softball event. The remaining teams will be two teams from the Asian qualifier and a wild card.

A total of 10 teams have participated in the Pan American Championship, that served as a qualifier for the World Cup. Cuba, No. 11 Venezuela, No. 12 Guatemala, No. 35 Dominican Republic and No. 8 Mexico competed in Group A; while Canada, Argentina, USA, No. 37 Colombia and Puerto Rico played in Group B. 

The Americas Qualifier will close this Saturday, with Argentina and Canada playing the final at the Nafaldo Cargnel Stadium in Parana, Argentina, scheduled at 4 p.m. local time. The bronze medal game is scheduled at 1 p.m.

Historic background

Argentina is the reigning world champion after the historic win in Prague, Czech Republic, in 2019. The 2022 World Cup will be the South American’s 11th participation in the event, and seventh in a row. Their first appearance in the Men’s Softball World Cup was in 1980 in Tacoma, USA.

Canada has participated in all 16 previous editions of this World Cup, and aims to win their fifth world title. They won the world champion trophy in 1972, 1976, 1992 and 2015 and tallies 13 medals. They have been on the podium in the last three editions, with a gold in 2015 and back to back bronzes in 2017 and 2019.

USA has also participated in every World Cup and is second in the event’s historic medal table with five titles, one silver and three bronzes. However, their last medal was a bronze in 2000, when the tournament was organised in South Africa. They are coming off a fifth place finish in 2019.

For Cuba, it will be a third participation in the global event. They made their debut with a fourth-place finish in 1988, and after that played in 2019 in Czech Republic, finishing in 10th place.
