On the eve of the International Museum Day, which is held this Wednesday, the National Museum of Dance has inaugurated an exhibition in the space that was occupied by the dressing room used by great Alicia Alonso, in the Great Theater of Havana, which is named after her today.

It is a beautiful tribute to the most emblematic of Cuban artists... and the place is particularly symbolic. It was there where the dancer prepared herself before her performances... and returned to after receiving the ovation of her audience.

The exhibition shows personal belongings of the famous dancer: costumes, shoes, and (one of the most valuable pieces) a case to store cosmetics that she used in the 1960s and that was kept for many years by her makeup artist, Antonio Canas.

Several photographs are also shown, including the one heading this note, and in which Cañas himself appears making up Alicia before a presentation in Moscow in the 1980s.

At the opening of the exhibition, the director of the National Dance Museum, Pedro Simón (Alicia's husband), valued the historical significance of this dressing room, which he considered a "cult place" for dance lovers.

Everyone "will some day want to go through this dressing room, see this space and feel it," he said, quoted by Prensa Latina.

Alicia Alonso’s evocation is permanent in a theater in which the prima ballerina assoluta starred in milestones in the history of Cuban culture. But there will never be too many tributes to a woman who placed Cuba on the universal map of ballet, of all dance. Alicia remains: in her dressing room, on stage, in the halls. She’s acclaimed spirit.
